The temporomandibular joint, more commonly referred to as the jaw joint or TMJ, assists in the basic opening and closing movements of the jaw. It is one of the most complex joints in the body, and unfortunately, this joint is a common area for recurring pain. Possible TMJ problems include limitations in movement of the jaw, swelling, and deterioration or damage of the components of the jaw joint.
Occlusion is the manner in which the teeth fit and function together. Occlusal disease can manifest in a number of symptoms:
- Tooth wear
- Tooth fracture
- Sensitive teeth
- Gum tissue recession
- Clenching or grinding of the teeth
Occlusal disease is treated by providing a balanced and harmonious bite relationship between the teeth and the muscles that move your jaw. This can be accomplished by the use of a bite splint (shown below), bite balancing of the teeth (equilibration) or restorative dentistry.
Our dentists will carefully examine your mouth to determine which type of TMJ treatment is right for you.
